George Cukor's The Model and the Marriage Broker (1951) is a romantic comedy that floats on the estimable charms of Thelma Ritter, who plays the titular matchmaker.
She mostly deals with misfits, eccentrics, and others on the fringes of romance from her office in the Flatiron Building, but she's sufficiently savvy and astute to recognize that Jeanne Crain, a lovely but lonely young dress model who is ill-advisedly involved with a married man, would be better off with Scott Brady, a brash and boastful but handsome young X-ray technician.
The NYC locations are a treat, and Ritter, as always, is aces. It's a picture whose charms, while admittedly modest, are undeniable. It's sweet and a little sad and well worth watching or recording tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 23) at 10:30 a.m. Eastern, if you get the Fox Movie Channel.
